I think I ordered the wrong memory for my motherboard

Can a Quad Channel Kit be used instead of a Dual Channel Kit in Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3? The MB states Channel supported: Dual Channel

Quad channel can be used in dual channel boards, the only thing to 'worry' about is the speed. Quad channel was made for the Sandy Bridge E series, so it works at (usually) like 2100 speed instead of 1333 or 1600.

Hypothetically, it should 'slow itself down' to the speed your board/CPU run, but I've never seen anyone post on how well it works with LGA 1155 chips.

Also the downfall to using Quad is the timings are usually higher (like 10-11-10-27) instead of CAS 9 or CAS 8. I see the ones you got are CAS 7, it should be fine, the form factor is still correct (DDR3 240 pin).

Quad channel RAM only means that the sticks are tested to work together. Dual channel kits are sets of 2 that work together and quad channel kits are sets of 4 that work together.

Being that dual channel needs sets of 2 and a quad channel kit is just 2 sets of 2 then of course a quad channel kit will work fine in a dual channel system.

Either of those sets are fine for a sandy Bridge system since the most important thing is that the RAM be 1.5v. The DDR3 1600 stuff will be faster.

Means if I install the RAM and it okay, I will need to test the speed to make sure it is alright. The question is should I keep them or return for the correct Memory Channel. Read my post. Either kit you linked to is FINE for your motherboard. Listing RAM as quad channel is a marketing ploy.

No it does not mean anything even of the sort. It means DDR3 2133 runs at a higher cas latency than DDR3 1333. The comment was aimed at Scottiemedic.

You still did not even say what RAM you ordered exactly but either of the kits you linked to are fine for a Z68 / Sandy Bridge system.

Optimal memory for a Sandy Bridge system is 1.5v DDR3 1600 cas 9. Any kit containing 2 or 4 identical sticks.

It works at whatever speed it is rated at.....since he linked to DDR3 1333 and DDR3 1600 those kits do not magically transform into DDR3 2133. If you want DDR3 2133 you have to buy it.

You missed the point. You implied that quad channel memory runs at DDR3 2100 speeds just because it's listed as quad channel. It's still whatever speed the RAM is rated at.

Being listed as a quad channel kit is only a marketing gimmick. The sticks have been tested as identical and that's it. You could just as easily buy 4 separate identical sticks and they would work as quad channel in a quad channel motherboard.

I was not trying to be critical, just trying to make sure the info given to the OP was as correct.

I'll put in 2 RAM (2x4) first to see how my motherboard responds; if there is a problem I'll put in all of the 4 RAM. I'll be installing my PC either Thursday or Friday since I'm waiting on the DVD (Optical) Drive to arrive.
