I recently bought a dell inspiron 3487, and I upgraded it with a power supply and video card. Without the video card, it boots up perfectly fine, but with the video card it doesn't show video on the monitor. Any suggestions are helpful.

exactly, sounds silly but i have done it myself. you have to have the monitor plugged into the video card and not the motherboard like it was when you got it.

you should also uninstall the integrated graphics drivers. boot it up without the card in it, go to device manager and uninstall the display driver. then put you new card in and boot it up with the cable plugged into it.

if it still does not work, then we shall look at other ideas.

not to say it your issue but its something to look at and common with prebuilt
there real funny on certain upgrades

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some don't.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that won't post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know that the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

plenty more like this you need to look up, your model and see what cards are proven to work and you got to remember they sell computers and you upgrading them is not part of the deal if you need a better one they got one to sell you upgrading don't make them money selling you a ready to go computer does

you buy you try and hope it don't make you cry

I do hope you get it going good luck
