My 5970 is not running very well at all, I am upgraded to the latest drivers, and yet still get terrible performance in SC2 and Left 4 Dead 2.

Intel i7 930
Corsair TX850
6GB G.Skill 1600 RAM

Thinking of changing to Nvidia as I am sick of these terrible drivers.

Could the card be faulty?

sorry for the late reply, i went to bed (different time zones, it was 1 in the morn when i was hear last)

for some reason GPUz didnt refresh the VRM temps. so all i can see is the latest temp when the game had topped running.

sorry to keeop making this a hassle, but could you download MSI Kombuster, and run that in a window. you should be able to view the temps while its running, and can post a screenshot then.

What should I make the settings for Kombustor?

And with the clocks, Like I said before GPU clock switches from 157 to 725 every 5 seconds, and memory switches from 300 to 1000 every 10 seconds or so, but mostly at 300.

stability test, 1024x768, not full screen.

pretty much default settings. just hit start, and watch the temps in GPUz. wait until they've leveled off at the highest point (and your clocks have started throttling) and post them.

im 90 percent sure that its the heat causing the VRM throttling, since i know of no other reason why the clocks would throttle during load. and as i said before, upping the fan speed should be a fairly simple fix.

Ok but coming from a 5970 you may want a little bit more power than 460 sli.

And in my other post I ment to say that it may be a driver issue not it was so thats my bad. I also posted early yesterday but of course it was removed for some reason. Typical of toms these days.

Im fully aware of that. I went from a 480 to gigabyte 460 1g sli. The only reason I said that is because he may want the same performance level of the 5970. And I mean very loosely the same performance.

The 460 will only sli with another card so thats as good as it gets. I love my cards and they are killing any game they get to but youve already hit the perverbial ceiling in performance. At least with a stronger card, you can run more than 2 cards. Also, since the 460 came out, you can find the 470's for about the same price as the 460's.

Exactly. And I'm getting the Galaxy Super OC editions as well. They clock in at 810Mhz.
However it is probably better to get the normal Gigabyte one and overclock it myself..
