Hi guys, my first post here, and I'm planning to build a desktop for school. I'm planning on using it for video encoding and gaming. I don't plan on running over 1080p and I have a budget of under $2,000. I need some explanations of the cooling and what is the best. I want a pretty silent system but great performance. I was wondering how much video encoding performance the i7 offers over the i5. I'm open to all suggestions as I don't know much about the desktop world. The system is gonna be built in February. So my plans so far. I'm also looking for a good blu ray drive under $80

I was also wondering if we could get aero back on windows 8.
I'm dying for feedback. Thanks!

um...ok. he just wants some suggestions. whatever...

anyway, yes, in my opinion that's a decent build. it's just...you don't need to spend that much on it. granted, you could collect the parts one by one as they go on sale through february, but a couple things are a bit overkill. The PSU, for example, doesn't need that much power. you could get something like this...

Just like me!

The motherboard is also a bit much I think. what interests you in it?

And you gotta give it to the 7970, it's a beast right now.

Thanks for the feedback. I wanted the 850 watt because the efficiency of it is rated much higher when using around 50% of the load and it has a great warranty. Plus I might add more things to the system in the future. The motherboard is just a beast and it have everything I can think of. I feel like it'll be more future-proof. I heard the i5 offers better gaming over the i7. Is this due to hyper-threading which you can turn off? Also what do you guys think about windows 8. I hate metro on desktops but it seems more powerful. I was planning to buy an ssd from best buy on black friday sale. 240gb for $120 - sandisk extreme?

the 850w is useless if you are not going to load it at 50+ %. its less efficient if you dont hit those marks.

i wouldnt get the rosewell capstone 550w any day. the xfx 550w is just fine and is 20 bucks cheaper

future proofing is impossible. 1155 is at its end. not too much point putting a ton of money into it

they are about the same. you can always turn it off in the bios if you dont like it

its not more powerful. get 7

sure go ahead but you will have to camp out for the prices

Care to explain why? Why u in such a mood troll?

I dont mean to be a butt, but being 80 plus gold isnt the only difference...

The 7 year warranty is also great for the Psu so its worth it. but your right about the mother board I could go for a cheaper one (under $200). I'm wondering if the i5 should be enough for everything i'm gonna do. Is there really that big of a difference for video encoding? I think I'm fine without the second drive. I could go with a cheaper screen too.
