Hello Everyone,

I am looking to build a new PC over the coming weeks, but would like to order the bits in the next few days.

I have the following spec'd and was after some opinions / improvements. I have gone slightly over budget and I still need to get the rest of the water cooling bits and fans etc, I want to do my first custom loop. I will buy that next month probably.

I have a couple of questions:

  1. PCP state an error that an extra x16 slot is needed but I'm not sure why.
  2. PCP state Zotac 4080 is not compatible with the case but again not sure why. it says it is with the Y70 case which I believe is the same except for the front screen.
  3. I have found a Gigabyte 4080 Aero OC for only a few £ more than the Zotac, would that be a better card?
  4. Is the 850w 80plus gold good enough? I wanted platinum but the only one with white cables was another £100.
  5. Would I notice much if I dropped down to an i5 and a lower MB , eg the msi z790 tomahawk? it would save ~£200.

i would suggest 7800X3D and link this just in case:

Z790 is end of life and the next gen parts requires a new mobo. the current mobo wont support pcie 5.0 SSDs.

you can reuse the waterblock for the next gen CPU upgrades. the LGA 1851 (next gen intel socket) most probably would have a different die size/height and hence wont be optimised even with a mounting kit for LGA 1851.

Hyte Y60 is vertical GPU support only case. cards more than 3 slots wont fit.

Since you are going with Corsair RGB, it might be best to stick with 1 ecosystem:

Waterblock - XC7 pro - £64 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Mi...239-8fd9-3c7c24d40c3d&pd_rd_i=B09FXW9F3X&th=1

Pump res combo - XD5 - £128 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Hy...e27-9593-6966bed142fa&pd_rd_i=B08HSQV5NZ&th=1

Top Radiator - Corsair XR5 360mm - £70 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-In...p/B07TL9WG22/ref=psdc_430499031_t1_B007P05XNC

Side Radiator - Corsair XR5 240mm - £57 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-In...VSGFSJC/ref=psdc_430499031_t1_B007P05XNC?th=1

Waterblock for 4080 gaming X - £196 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Hydro-SUPRIM-Water-Block/dp/B0BRT5YGPB/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2KB2VF23C8V1X&keywords=XG7+4080&qid=1700826457&s=computers&sprefix=xg7+4080,computers,78&sr=1-2&ufe=app_do:amzn1.fos.23648568-4ba5-49f2-9aa6-31ae75f1e9cd&th=1

Core water cooling parts total: 515

Suggested changes:

Ryzen 7800X3D, runs cooler and uses less power.

The mobo supports pcie 5.0 ssd for future upgrades.

ATX 3.0 psu with 16 pin connector and 135mm fan, 10 year warranty

2.9 mm/h20 static pressure fans - 3 top, 2 side and 1 rear.

wow thanks for your extra detailed reply!

I will do some research on it. I went off AMD after my old system ran mega hot, think it was an issue back in the day, 15-20 years ago... been with Intel since.

If I am taking the air cooler off the card does the slot thickness still matter?

I was thinking of the Lian Li inf inf RGB, expensive but look awesome. what issues would there be mixing ecosystems?

The 7800X3D runs cooler. Max load is 105W and gaming loads should be 80W typically.

if you put in a water block, it becomes a 2 slot design. there are even single slot designs, but the corsair one is a 2 slot design.

It helps to compare other water cooled Hyte Y60 systems in the web. gives you a good idea about the tube runs and extenders/adaptors needed. I would insist you do so.

If you use the Lian li fans, you might have to run the RGB with their software. They might also be compatible with other RGB ecosystems but they would be optimised for lian li's own software. Corsair does not have the side infinity mirror effect, so i guess icue wont have those effects in their list.

thanks again.

another Q, is it worth getting a pcie 5 ssd / mobo at the minute? you listed a 4.

The Aorus Elite AX B650 supports pcie 5.0 ssd in the top slot.

the price of the 5.0 ssd are not worth it. Moreover for general usage and gaming wont benefit from pcie 5.0 speeds. I would say wait for 2 years and then it would become relevant.

😀 think we posted at the same time.

thanks for the help Lucky
