Help with new computer build.

Recently i decided on building a new computer and i need help getting a PSU that's right for my computer. Here are my specs:

Intel Core i7-3820 3.6Ghz LGA 2011 CPU No Heatsink

Asus SABERTOOTH-X79 LGA 2011pin 8 X DDR3, 3 X PCI-E Motherboard

Kingston KINSV300S37A/120G 120GB SSDNOW V300 SATA3 2.5" SSD HDD

G.Skill Ripjaws-X 16GB Kit (8Gx2) DDR3-2133 F3-2133C9D-16GXH

WD 3.5" Black 1TB WD1002FAEX SATA3 7200rpm HDD

I would also appreciate if you guys gave me different suggestions on what i could improve or change. I'm also considering getting dual monitors in the future.

Well I'd get an i5 3570k, 8GB RAM, a WD Blue. Consider the MSI 670 PE, same/better performance for much less, just the card isnt silent like asus.

I'd get a 650W PSU. 750 if you're getting SLI one day

If you're gaming you will not benefit from an X79 system. Stick with Z77. Also better than that Kingston SSD would be the OCZ Vector, and a better CPU cooler is the Noctua NH-U9B.

Without knowing that you are planning on doing with this build it is very difficult to recommend anything that is very useful. That being said if you are "gaming":

I would replace the Ripjaws with at least 8GB of something else, just because I have always had a bad experience with them. Even if you are not gaming I would recommend a change to something like Corsair Vengeance, Kingston Beast or Mushkin Red Line ram.

The CPU Cooler you chose will do its job, but the XIGMATEK Dark Knight II cools very well (cooler than some corsair waterblocks) and is still about the same size, but is a bit pricier.

If you want two monitors in the future, than a card with more than 2GB or memory will serve you better. The are some Nivida cards with a lot of bandwidth but they are often very expensive. An AMD video card will probably serve you better as they often come with more memory and are just about the same price for performance.

For the motherboard, I would recommend a Z77 MOBO, AsRock, ASUS, MSI, there are a ton of choices.

If you are building this for some rendering stuff, than I still recommend a lot of the same components I listed earlier with the exception of the mobo, an X79 Chipset will serve best for that kind of thing.


As for the PSU an 750-850 Watt unit will serve you well for a long time in the case that you ever want to upgrade or add more parts like another GPU. Just make sure the unit is at least 80 plus certified.

I don't recommend the 3820 because the it's far more expensive than going with a 3770K and there's not a lot of difference between the two. You're overpaying in an area where you don't need it. If you're going with the X79 then I'd say get the 3930K or get nothing.

True that true that, RAM won't play nice with the X79 Chipsets and I completely forgot about the CPU itself. I agree with the 3930K but we need to know some a bit more about what this person is looking for from this build, especially since that CPU is really expensive.

Well the 3770K and 3820 perform near identical to each other. The 3930K is definitely more expensive but yeah things like overall budget and use need to be taken into account.
