So a few days ago my old PSU exploded and i have now installed a new one. The new one is a Energon 650W PSU but it can not connect to the graphics card. The PSU comes with a single 8-pin connection but the GPU (a GTX 970) requires a 8-pin and 6-pin connection - however, the GPU has a 8-pin to 6-pin cable already but it leaves the other 6-pin connection unconnected. Which cable would suit best for this situation? I’ve looked at a 8-pin to dual 6+2 as i figured the dual would connect to PSU’s 8-pin and into the 8 to 6-pin adaptor wire whole the other 6+2 can fit into the last 6-pin connection in the gpu

You've had a psu explode & bought a cheap tat replacement.

Return it & buy a psu with the correct cables

A 650w psu with only a single 6+2 pin connector is guaranteed to be poor quality.

A good quality 450w+ will have a 8+6 pin connector minimum

The PSU quality doesnt really matter. The PC is very old and has been running on a bad 600W coolermaster PSU for over 7 years - im just looking for something to get it back running. Its an old pc which i expect to replace in the near future and i’d just like to know which cable would connect the two parts

If a psu does not have the extra 6 pin cable, it likely is not able to power one.
That said, if you want to try it, buy a molex to 6 pin adapter cable like this:
https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Express-Video-Power-Adapter/dp/B0007RXDDM/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_lp_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=53750N80B1W51Z3D2B4A

Beware...
The problem will come if the psu gets heavily loaded and fails.
It may not have the protective circuitry to keep from damaging your parts.

Why not return the energon and buy a good psu now that you can use for your future build?
Pick a tier 1/2 unit from a list such as this:

Seasonic focus is very good.
