I would like to upgrade my storage to a new NVME ssd for a boot drive. I had in mind the Samsung PRO 970 NVME m.2 drive. Link here

I was wondering if I bought this could I just plug it right into a m.2 slot on my motherboard and get the maximum potential out of the drive? or would I need to buy a product like the wings px1 to get the full capabilities. Keep in mind I would like to use this for a boot drive, is this even possible at the 3,500 MB/s read and 2,100 MB/s write they advertise? and does my motherboard even support these types of drives for boot drives?

Yes. you have 2 M.2 slots on your motherboard one of which runs at gen 3 x4 and the other gen 2 x4. if in the bottom slot your speeds will be reduced alot. if you want to utilise your NVMe SSD to its full potentional install it to the covered m.2 slot near the top PCIe slot (highlighted in red):
