[SOLVED] Help with overclocking fx8300

I recently just updated my computer to play some games. I’m a causal gamer, I play csgo mainly. I had a fx4300, and it was getting way better FPS then what my fx8300 is. Then I saw that csgo is more core speed focused. Can I boost my current set up to match the fx4300 speed or better ? Im
new to all this and just trying to play a nice smooth game with my set up. I don’t want to spend any more money at the moment and yes I don’t have a ssd yet , it’s on the way.



Current set up below :


Computer Setup
PSU: EVGA BR 700W ATX12V /EPS12V 80 Plus
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1650 Super SC Ultra
CPU: AMD FX-8300 3.3 GHz 8-Core
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series (2x 8GB)
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2
SSD:
HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB

Cooling:
  • 2x APEVIA CF12SL-URED 120mm Fan
  • 2x Rosewill RFA-80RL - 120mm Fan
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition

I also had an FX 8300 Vishera, simple answer here..... very hot chip to start with, from possibly the worst family's of CPU AMD ever made. I had it with a 1060 6gb so a similar set-up to yours.

  1. an OC will bring virtually no benefit, but WAY more heat and high voltage which your cooler will be unable to keep in check
  2. Your Mobo will be unable to support the OC as the VRM's etc will fry. An 990FX motherboard might cut it.

But if you want to try this thread may help, but I had one and do not expect a massive in-game fps boost.

I totally agree you shouldn't OC an 8300 on that motherboard as it would probably fry the VRM. Either that or it would be almost constantly throttling, so no effective gains.

What you could do is disable some cores if the motherboard BIOS has settings for that. Alternatively, use MSConfig but it's not as effective. Then overclock...maybe 4 cores only....to play CSGo since it's thread-limited anyway. The extra cores only add heat load that burns up the VRM and brings on throttling.

The way to OC is in the BIOS. Bump up core multiplier, then bump up core voltage to keep it stable. There are lots of how-to's on the web, in you tube, etc. Just don't expect to get the high clocks they can until you get a 990FX board.

The short answer is don't expect much out of a AMD FX series processor. There was a reason that Intel was able to dominate the market during that period and it really just came down to poor IPC on AMD's behalf. AMD's answer was to throw cores at it and sell it cheap which made it look good marketing wise, but the problem was that core count with poor IPC just pulled down the clocks and a four core Intel processor of that vintage walked all over it. That poor combination is why you are getting worse frame rates with more cores. Those chips ran hot with very limited OC headroom. Against Piledriver and Bulldozer Ryzen was a total game changer for AMD because IPC and efficiency were able to catch up to Intel for the first time in a decade. Those older chips aren't even in the same league.
