Help with Overclocking my Q6600 G0

Hi,

I need help/advice on overclocking my processor. I have The Q6600 G0 at 2.4ghz per core, and I here that the G0 is good for overclocking, here is a picture of my cpu temps at 0 load.

I think these temps look a little high for zero load so i probably need a better cooler, my motherboard is this: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=4CORE1333-FULLHD

I dont no what would be the best fan to buy and what one will fit my board, so this is y i need your help.

That is a link to the How guide on overclocking a Q6600 which isnt what i asked, i am looking for advice on should i replace my CPU cooler before i even think about overclocking as i dont want to fry my computer so that link doesnt help much.

My specs are:
asrock 4core1333-fullhd
intel Q6600 (thermaltake tr2 cooler)
4gb ddr2
nvidia 8500gt
450watt power supply

I have bought a Fatality 550watt PSU which will arrive soon and also plan to get a ati 5850 in the next 3 weeks, i was told on another thread that i should overclock my CPU to avoid bottlenecks.

The cooler`s i have looked at are:

zalman 9700 and 9900. but i dont think they will fit in my case.

is CoolerMaster Hyper 212 plus or CoolMaster Hyper N520 any good ???.

Those idle core temps are really bad!

Did you apply the thermal compound and secure the heatsink correctly? If so, you definitely need a new cooler.

CoolerMaster Hyper 212 plu and Hyper N520 should be good enough. In addition, I recommend you apply Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

thanks for the help, ill go for one of the coolermaster heatsinks then, yea i was thinking that the idle temps were bad. i bought my pc custom built from an ebay store so obviously they didnt put the thermal compound on correctly.

Ok so my initial zero load temps were:

core1:56
core2:57
core3:52
core4:51

So i did some testing of my computer, i removed the side panel and turned on the pc, shutdown all unused applications and the core temps at zero load were:

core1:39
core2:42
core3:36
core4:36

so i think its not the Heatsink after all (although i am still interested in replacing it for a better one). so i hoovered out the case and the one side fan that is pulling air into the case and the temps were:

core1:45
core2:46
core3:40
core4:40

Not as good as with the cover off but still better than before, so are these temps now normal ? and is there anything i can do to improve the temps inside my case, as i say i only have the one side fan and its small. there is no slots on the front or the top for a fan, the only extra fan slot is at the back of the case below the psu and i could put like a 12cm fan there but is this not for pulling air out of the case ??. here is a pic of my case for reference.

I also measured the width of my case and its around 16.5 to 17.5 cm, most of the good CPU coolers are around 15 to 16cm, will it cause any problems if its a tight fit ?.

i have used everest to scan my computer and it says this is my ram configuration
DIMM1: Crucial 1 GB DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-15 @ 333 MHz) (4-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) (3-3-3-9 @ 200 MHz)
this is the same for all 4 1gb sticks
it says this above the ram

Memory Timings 4-4-4-12 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS)
Command Rate (CR) 2T

I have also pulled some information from my motherboard and it says my ram is:
1024mb/266MHz (DDR2 533) - is this correct ???

Other info:
CPU Freq = 267
PCIe = 100
Speed Sprectrum = Auto
Ratio Actual value = 9

Cpu thermal throttling = enabled
intel speedstep = Auto
Memory Roadmap = Disabled

Dram volt = auto(2.04v)
NBcore volt = Auto

Hey i just installed Prime95 64bit v25.8 and I ran a stress test for 5mins only my my core temps went up to:

Core #1: 75 C
Core #2: 74 C
Core #3: 68 C
Core #4: 66 C

Is this really bad as I read you are supposed to run it for a number of hours and mines hit those temps after 5 minutes ??
