Help with RAM for Dell Precision T1700

One of my 2 memory sticks has failed in my Dell Precision T1700. They are 2 x 8GB 2Rx8 PC3-12800U-11-13-81. Part No. HMT41GU6BFR8C-PB - Non-ECC

As I now need to replace them I wanted to go for some faster better RAM. I check on crucial and the fastest RAM I can get 2400mhz but its ECC. Non-ECC its 1600mhz.

I use the PC for gaming/simulators so not sure if ECC or non is better?

What would be the best and fastest ram to replace it with that is compatible?

The board will only accept 1600MHz whether it's ECC or not, here's the data sheet for your model. If you're using it for virtual machines or file hosting then I would get ECC, but if you're just gaming and playing simulators then I don't see any reason to pay extra for ECC RAM.

Thanks. On the crucial site it implies I can go faster... or are they just selling me ram that can't be operated at higher than 1600mhz due to the MB?

The memory controller is only capable of 1600MHz. Faster RAM will be downclocked (underclocked, whatever you want to call it) so that it operates at 1600MHz. It's a waste of money to buy anything above 1600MHz.

Ok thanks. Does the ram you provided a link to have good timings? Would it be any better than what i have now (when it was working 🙂

The old RAM had timings of 11-11-11-35. Choice 1 has timings of 9-9-9-24 (better). Choice 2 has timings of... Huh, Crucial doesn't list them, well then... I would imagine they're not too bad seeing as they're made by Crucial

Also I just checked it out here and it says its not compatible with my Dell Precision T1700... Should I ignore this or listen to it?

Well I just read the spec sheet for the Dell tower and there was nothing there that said it wouldn't work. But if it says it's not compatible then I wouldn't buy it. Sorry for causing confusion

That's fine. I would sooner you advise the best u can. If I was buying ram from another manufacturer then I wouldn't be able to use a compatibility checker like crucial.

Surely other ram must be compatible.
