if someone is selling a ryzen 3 1200 that was OC'ed to 3.7 and I buy it and drop it into my a320 motherboard which will not support the OC will it still function and throttle back to stock speed? or will it not function at all until put into a b350 and reset to stock?

Solution
If the CPU is compatible with the motherboard it should start up at stock speeds. The motherboard controls the voltage and clock speeds of the CPU
thank you guys. I never OC because I like to keep my machines for a long time and only upgrade every 5-7 years so I don't risk shortening the lifespan with OC but the one being sold is 3 months old and was OC'ed and is only $65

As long as the voltage isn't increased it shouldn't decrease the life span that much. If the motherboard isn't meant for overclocking, increasing the frequency could cause more heat on the power delivery components than intended by the manufacturer. That being said I am using a 5 year old overclockable MOBO and K CPU, but haven't overclocked for the same reason. When I notice the CPU causing hangups or sluggishness, I'll increase the frequencies a little to get a little more use out of it.

a proper overclock in fact does NOT shorten lifespan

its the ill informed people that overvolt and under cool that kill cpu's

XD
