Help with System Restore

Hi, I'm very new to XP and am just learning about System Restore.

I need to do a registry modification suggested in a Microsoft
KnowledgeBase article. Say I first set a System Restore breakpoint. If
if anything goes wrong can I totally return to how my system was before
I attempted the registry mod? Is everything returned to exactly the way
it was?

Yes, for most of the cases.

System Restore works a lot like the Undo command in Microsoft Word. You can
use System Restore to remove any system changes that were made since the last
time you remember your computer working correctly. System Restore does not
affect your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing
history, drawings, favorites, or e–mail) so you won't lose changes made to
these files.

Thanks, so this registry modification that I am about to make would get
totally undone if I do a System Restore?

Locate the following keys for your operating system: For Microsoft
Windows NT and Microsoft Windows2000:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\{current profile}\

After you locate the registry keys, export and delete the reference to
the Hotmail personal folders (.pst) file or the Hotmail account
settings.

Though it does make me nervous that the instructions are for Windows
2000. I'm ASSUMING they would also apply to XP...

Hi Rick,

Yes, System Restore should restore this portion of the registry.

Another safeguard would be to highlight each registry key (in the left pane) affected, and
do File - Export. Name and save each key to the desktop. If something goes wrong, simply
double click on the exported .reg file to merge it back into the registry.

A third option would be to backup the entire registry using Erunt.
