help with two sound cards in one system

hey guys, here is what i'm thinking about doing; install two sound cards in one system. the reason for this is i want two audio streams on different set of speakers. lets say one set of speakers will be placed in the basement and the other in another place.

Do u want two different streams or the same one?

If you want the same one just put a splitter to the rear, center , and sub cables going out from the sound card
If you want two different streams I'm not sure but there could be a bit of conflicts

You would have to have 2 different sound cards I believe to allow for 2 different streams at once. It would make it easier at least. Most media players (wmp, winamp, etc) allow you to choose your output so just set one player to one sound driver and another player to the other sound driver. I've never tried it but I see no reason why that wouldn't work.

Yes, I've heard of pros doing this. They configured each program for the card they wanted. But I'm not sure how.

i'm working on it. its really messy though. you got to go through so many different settings just to change something simple.... sucks

You can do this - I have 2 Sound systems on my DAW... I expect it to work the same way with 2 'normal' sound cards too... I have the o/b sound (An Asus P4B533 m/b) set as the default in windows - so any normal windoze sounds (WMP etc.) run through that, and then Cubase etc and/or winamp, (since this is the easiest program in which to change sound devices), running through my Edirol DA2496...

Hey Scam,

It really depends on the software once the cards are up and running. Some software, like Tracktor, Cakewalk, or other DAW software expect people to have multiple I/Os. Other stuff geared toward the consumer may not be so intuitive. Also, you may have to run completely different apps for the same thing, like using winamp for downstairs and WMP for upstairs. What are you looking to run, anyways?
