I've been talked into helping a friend fix a problem with her scanner, a UMAX Astra 2000U. It used to work, but was problematic. Now it would appear that the USB ports in her 200 MHz Pentium are fried. Apparently, they have a chipset (Intel 82371SB http://www.umax.com/support/knowledge/solutionsSC.cfm?docs=SC00018 which will not support high draw devices like a scanner.
I'm looking at a D-Link DSB-500 http://shop3.outpost.com/product/65915 but I'm concerned that it can support the draw. It supports 500mA but I can't find info on how much draw the scanner needs.
Any help?
