I have an AIW 9700 Pro that I bought awhile back and I wanted to
upgrade to the latest drivers & MMC, but the disk got broken that came
with it. I know what you are thinking, that I'm trying to find the
8.1 disk. No, not that.

I understand from the many posts I've read that you do not need the
MMC 8.1 CD if you want to install another DVD software decoder. I
have PowerDVD, but the last time I tried to update the driver suite,
skipping the DVD player, PowerDVD would only skip badly and not play
very well at all. I have a P4-1.8. Is the ATI DVD codecs necessary
in order to play DVD's in hardware mode in other apps? Should I have
installed PowerDVD again after the upgrade? Do I need a later version
of PowerDVD?

I have never used the DVD player in ATI, always preferring the
PowerDVD, that works quite well with my Dolby Digital system, so I
don't care if I have the ATI DVD player, but if I can't get a 3rd
party DVD player to work, I guess I'll have to go locate the disk to
buy somewhere. I kinda hate paying $25 for something I already had to
get something that I already use.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There's no basic reason why Power DVD shouldn't work as a standalone
with your card, SW; it should come with all the required codecs.

It might be a good idea to uninstall the DVD player before upgrading
your display driver, though, then reinstalling it. Did PowerDVD work
Ok before you did that?

I found that the version of PowerDVD 4.0 (it doesn't say, but that's
what it is) that came with an ASUS 9600XT I had always played a little
jerkily; it improved a lot when I dled and installed the free v4
upgrade from PowerDVD's site. Which version of PowerDVD do you have,
and was it included with something else or a purchased version?

I have 4.0 and I will check on the update. I never even thought to do
so because it worked fine with the ATI card on mine. You are probably
right though, I should have uninstalled it and then reinstalled after
the update. Probably got confused. Will try the update again (after
backing up the drive) and see if I can get it to work.

Thanks for your reply...
