I currently have this rig
Case: Corsair Carbide Series 400R Mid-Tower Gaming Case
Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z68MA-D2H-B3 INTEL Z68 CROSSFIRE/SLI DDR3 SATA3
CPU: i7-2600K 3.40 GHz 8M Intel Smart Cache LGA1155
Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3/1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Module
GPU: 2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB 16X PCIe Video Card (EVGA Superclocked) SLI
PSU: 1,000 Watts - CoolerMaster Silent Pro Gaming 80 Plus Power Supply

My question is would I have to upgrade my motherboard if I were going upgrade my cpu to an i7-3770k? Also, would I have to upgrade my motherboard if I were to upgrade my gpu to a nvidia gtx770?

Thanks in advance!

Solution
You know, going to a 3770k from a 2600k isn't that much of an upgrade and certainly isn't worth the price. Better just to use that towards another 770 😀 and just overclock your CPU. You shouldn't need to update your BIOS to handle a new card, but it's always good to check just in case. In very rare cases a board may not be fully PCI-E complaint and might have the odd issue or two with new cards that are addressed through a BIOS update.
I was only upgrading for a game that is coming out soon. I know I definitely have to upgrade my GPUS. So I figured that I had to upgrade my CPU as well. The recommended specs for the game are listed below. Tell me what you think.

Windows 8 64bit
AMD Six Core Cpu
Intel Quad Core Cpu
8GB Memory
Nvidia GeForce GT 660
3GB Graphics memory
30GB Hard drive

What would I have to do?
Thanks for your help. Really appreciate it.

@megamanx00
That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I really didn't want to upgrade my CPU as much. I could use the extra money towards another 770.. that does sound interesting... Or what about just going all out for the 780?

@werner123
Do you really think my 570s can handle? What about if I was trying to play on high settings? upgrading the GPU would be necessary right?

My PSU shouldn't have any problem with the upgrade either right?
Thanks Again.

You shouldn't need a bigger case since it's pretty good. I don't imagine you'd have an issue unless you got some extremely long dual GPU card. The same goes for your PSU. Anyway make sure to spend a few bucks on CPU cooling so you can overclock your CPU and get the most out of your new cards.

I was doing some research and it says In order for me to use have a pci 3.0 I would have to be using a Intel 22nm CPU. Right now my i7 2600k isn't considered uner that category. With that being said a gtx 770 wouldn't run because it uses pci 3.0?

Here's the link for the product details for my motherboard.

Thanks again.

Did some more research and you guys are right I should be able to run this card with my setup. It does having more than 1 can result in a bottleneck? Any truth to that?

Thanks. You've been quite the help. I'm going to probably upgrade my gfx card to a 770 or 780 since I'm no longer upgrading the cpu.

It doesn't matter if I get the superclocked one and don't overclock right?

It was going to be either amazon or newegg. Have a better one in mind?

EDIT: The game requires 3GB of Ram for its recommended requirements. So since I won't be purchasing 2 cards at the same time for sli, I pretty much have to get a card with at least 4gb?

Well I purchased it a couple of hours ago. I should be receiving it tomorrow with the one day shipping. Hopefully everything works just fine. I'll be testing it out on battlefield 3 this weekend. Can't wait to see how it performs during the battlefield 4 beta in a few weeks. Thanks man, I really appreciate all the help.

I'll give an update later this weekend.

So here's the long overdue update. The gtx 770 has been just fine. Pretty much runs everything on high or ultra. But now the time has come to grab another one for sli, but don't know whether or not it will fit inside my case. I really ddon't want to upgrade my case, but if it's necessary... what you gonna do?
