Help with upgrades

Looking to upgrade my PC

Hello all, I been out of the loop for sometime. my System is in my profile. What i am trying to do is give my kids my old parts and upgrade mine. there system is getting old FX 4100 gtx 260 ect.

I guess i need a
Mobo
CPU
RAM
CPU cooler
GPU

This will be done over 6 to 8 months, should i wait for DDR4 ?
Price i am willing to spend is about 800 US dollars give or take.

I bought a new SSD Crucial MX 100 256 GB yesterday

Was thinking going for a i7 and a nvidia GPU

Any help would be grate

Thanks

The i5 I selected is about the same as the i5 that you have. Better iGPU, and some additional instructions, but none of that makes any difference.

Your budget is limited, you have to cut back somewhere.

A GTX970 is 'mandatory' for your three year future.

Taking out the case, HDD, and PSU gives you enough to upgrade to a Xeon E3 1231 and to get a decent ATX H97 motherboard.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($248.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($87.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($57.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card:...
Is it just for gaming? If so the i5 is fine.

Some rebates are used and it's a little over budget but:

The PSU is bigger than you need, but it's cheaper with the rebate.

How much faster is that i5-4460 then my i5 3570K Any charts ? and a i7 VS i5 ?

The PC is mostly for games, Sometimes i do some light editing of home videos.

Don't really like micro boards any full ATX board ?

DDR3 ? not better to wait for DDR4 ?

GTX 970 vs GTX 670 Chart ?

I don't need a case HDD or PSU

Are you planning to use the PSU in your signature? I saw the 3570K in your signature, but you mentioned that you were replacing a FX4300.

i5 is the right processor for mostly gaming and about $100 cheaper. As a compromise, you could consider a Xeon E3 like the 1231, which is about halfway in price between the i5 and i7. It cannot be overclocked and has no iGPU, but you are using a discrete GPU, so that doesn't matter.

What not mATX? Things have changed and it saves money. The more you save elsewhere, the better GPU you can have.

There is always a choice to be made about what can be done today, and what will be possible tomorrow. A DDR4 system (CPU, motherboard, and RAM) lie beyond your current budget and will do so for some time.

The GTX670 is both more expensive and less powerful than the GTX970.

Yes i plan to use the PSU in my profile !

My goal is to have a PC that will play games for the next 3 years and give my kids my old parts

I understand about the i5 vs i7 for gaming ect . I just want to make sure that i have upgrades vs my old parts when i build my new system and give the kids my new parts .

The second system can be overclocked. If you do that, you will need an aftermarket CPU cooler (and some faster memory eventually)

Microcenter is good, and they have some fantastic, 'pick it up in the store' deals, but other prices can be high. Good CPU deals at the moment. Get what you can.

The closest Microcenter to me is Marietta, Georgia. It used to be about 10 miles up the freeway, now it's over 510 miles 🙁
