Hello,

I need to upgrade my computer for school/work, and gaming (mostly World of Warcraft, sometimes games like unreal tournament.) I would like to upgrade the motherboard and CPU, and the graphics card as well. I would like to keep the upgrade under $500. I will not be changing the case and would prefer not to upgrade unnecessarily. For additional information, please ask.

I think I want the following (are they compatible with what I have, and are they good for gaming?)

-AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W FD8350FRHKBOX Desktop Processor

-ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Here's what I have now...

-Rosewill DESTROYER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case, comes with Three Fans-1x Front Blue LED 120mm Fan, 1x Top 120mm Fan, 1x Rear 120mm Fan, option Fans-2x Side 120mm Fan, 1x Top 120mm Fan, 1x Bottom Fan

-ASUS M4A785-M AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

-AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition Quad-Core 2.5GHz Socket AM2+ 125W HD985ZXAJ4BGH Desktop Processor - OEM

-ASUS EAH5550/DI/1GD3(LP) Radeon HD 5550 1GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP

-Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

-One G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBNT

-Cooler Master Hyper N520 - CPU Cooler with Copper Base and 5 Heatpipes

-Thermaltake TR2-430

For my monitor, I believe its a standard VGA? My keyboard and mouse are USB wireless Logitech.

What would be a good upgrade? My computer sometimes turns on, sometimes it doesn't (with no beep) but the motherboard lights up...

Solution
OK.

The motherboard and CPU combination is one of the bead for AMD FX and you can overclock well on it. for the other parts

The limiting factor in your upgraded system will be the GPU. It needs to be upgraded to get the best out of your new CPU and motherboard. If you are careful everywhere else, this is where you must spend the most. I would want a GTX960 or better if I could afford it (or a deal on a R9 270, 270X or 280)

The HDD is fine. you may need a new OS if your old one cannot be transferred to the new system.

A memory upgrade to 2 x 4 GB of DDR3-1866 or 2133 memory would be a good fir for your system.

The cooler will do.

The PSU needs to be a lot better. An XFX 550W unit would be a good fit, otherwise something by...

The PSU needs to be a lot better. An XFX 550W unit would be a good fit, otherwise something by Antec or Seasonic, or even a bigger EVGA B2 - G2 unit at the 60$ - 80$ range is needed, but you may be able to find a cheaper refurbish, open box, or deal.

Solution
On Newegg there are a few combos offtered, would the bold option be better or the italic option? Cost wise, they are very similar.
-AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W FD8350FRHKBOX Desktop Processor

-ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

-G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) Desktop Memory Model F3-2400C10D-16GTX

-AMD FX-9590 Vishera 8-Core 4.7GHz Socket AM3+ 220W FD9590FHHKWOF Desktop Processor - Black Edition

-ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

-G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL

For a PSU would option bold be better or the italic options? Will they be enough power for this build?

EVGA New Version SuperNOVA 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified 750W Active PFC ATX12V EPS12V 5 Year Warranty 110-B1-0750-VR SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Modular Intel 4th Gen CPU Ready Power Supply

Thermaltake PS-TPD-0850MPCGUS-1 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Active PFC Power Supply
