Hi all I have an existing broadband connection with virgin media and I am still using the super hub 1 at the heart of my network all my devices and wires and switches are all gigabit cat 6e cable the super hub is not

So what I plan to do is put Virgins super hub into modem mode,
Buy a more uptodate router and connect everything to this router instead of the sh1

My question will this make any differences to my network overall and also can the 2 routers be connected to each other via the Ethernet ports the same as switches

Internet provider (fiber) > SH1 (modem mode) <Ethernet> New Router <Ethernet> switch

Thanks

What is the bandwidth on the Super Hub? If the ports are less then gigabit then you definitely need a new modem, but a new one with 10gbit would be good for a fiber connection. As for a new router, first you would want to hook that right into the modem, and then the switches into the router. For a router you want a multiple antenna (3+) 802.11ac dual band one.

Hi sorry for the long wait on a reply and thanks for your speedy reply,

After more reading I have discovered that my router has got gigabit ports

My problem is that my modem is still acting as a router and constantly crashing and loosing all connections and also my switches are reporting that they are receiving bad packets from the router not other devices just the router,

If I put that in modem mode and used a different router for all the dhcp and file transferring would this help with my current routers problems.

Also I have been thinking about a second wap the thing that confuses me is that they state things like 300MBPS WIFI but have only got 10/100 Ethernet ports so if I connected it to a gigabit switch I wouldent be able to receive the 300mbs wifi speeds ?

The gateway being the router in front of the modem ?

And I aren't sure if my ISP will send me anything they tight (virgin media) but you are allowed to put the router they sent ages ago into modem mode and run your own router

As for wireless access points rated 300Mbps but only use 10/100 Ethernet ports wouldent that limit me to 100Mbps
