Hi,

I have a project that I will be required to complete next week for my apprenticeship. I need to essentially build pcs and connect them to the same network, documentating everything, including a test plan. I'm wondering how I would show PCs connected together on the network? Could a simple ping command be enough to evidence this? I'm having issues sharing files through the VMs as it just says windows cannot find the file although I'm going through the steps my boss showed me on hyper v but I don't have access to hyper v at home.

anybody else have any suggestions on how to test the connectivity of VMs or maybe where I'm going wrong on virtualbox if there's a difference with the configuration, between it and hyper v?

Any help appreciated thanks.

Solution
no problem there, simply download and install win 10 pro/edu and run it unactivated. you still get access to everything. would be better to make sure you can do it on hyper v if that is what you will be tested on.

run pro/edu as a dual boot and move to it when working and then reboot to home when you are not :)

or if you have a spare hdd you can disconnect EVERYTHING else and install to that. then on boot hit f8 and chose that drive to boot to.

either works and swapping os's requires a reboot either way

I'm not necessarily tested on hyper v, I've contacted a member of my group, and they've told me you can use any virtualisation software you chose, but the certification provider, provides a platform for users to use hyper v (I've been told its god awful though). So I have no issues using virtual box I was just having problems with sharing files over the internal virtual switch.

Spoke to my boss today and went through the steps I completed and he thinks I may have missed giving separate ip addresses to each of the VMs which will cause them to cause an error when passing the file. Unsure though until I test it when I get home

VirtualBox is also fine.

Spin up a couple of Windows VMs, share a couple of folders via File Sharing.
Copy some files between the two VMs.
Yeah I set up the VMs and tried to go through the steps for file sharing but was unsure where I was going wrong, when I was going through Windows run to share the file I was getting an error. I think I forgot to assign different ip addresses whilst keeping them on the same subnet. I had a word with my boss today and he thinks that will be it.

If each VM has the same IP address, you're gonna have problems.

anytime i set up a virtual network like that i also use static ip's for each device. vm's, switches, and anythign else virtual that can have an ip. does help with a lot of connectivity issues like that. good place to start when you get to work on it again.

sharing folders and such is a bit tricky for sure. i get it working at times and other times i give up after screaming at my pc for a couple hours.
