Help with wind 98 file transfer

My parents just got a new laptop with vista on it and they want to get their files off their old machine. I have tried using a thumb drive but the old computer won't read it. What can I do?

Reason for edit: Their machine has windows 98 not 95. I was wrong.

You have to download drivers for USB keys in 98. Depending on which one you have, you may or may not find drivers. You'd be better off connecting the old hard drive to the new computer.
