Windows Update Fails:
Disable your anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
Make sure that your firewall is allowing the connection to Windows Update .
This would be on ports 80 and 443.

You may be able to resolve the MSI issue by manually downloading/installing
the 3.0 version from here:

I suggest a thorough cleaning, download, install, update and scan with
Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com
After the initial spyware removeal, restart the computer and scan again with
Ad-aware. You will probably be able to install after this.
