ive been playing half life 3 alot latly and last night my system began to freeze up for no reason. just randomly while i was playing the frame rate would slow down drasticly and make it imposssible to play. this would only last for about 10 seconds than the frame rate would jump back up.

just looking for some help plz/

6800 gt oc
1 gb kinston vaulue
350 power supply
120 gb maxtor dirve

the 6800 gt runs at about 77 under heavy load

You may be experiencing throttling due to temp. Might be a good idea to clean your hsf.

Might want to take a look on the powersupply too... a little weak for a p4(prescott, im assuming here) and a geforce6800

Why? It's not crashing. I'm getting increasingly tired of people suggesting Power supply for issues like this. Power supplies being underpowered do not cause poor performance, they cause crashes, sudden power-offs, and reboots.

If the driveshaft in a car is too thin/brittle to transfer the power from the engine to the wheels, it'll break, and all power will be lost... It'll never just give reduced performance.

Poor PSUs are responsible for many things, but poor performance isn't one of them. :roll:

Now, maybe his PSU will die relatively quickly due to the amount of load on it (I agree, it does look a little low for a scotty, but it's probably ok for a Northwood... His CPU could be either. If it's a Fortron then he'll probably be ok either way for a while..) but it's not the source of his immediate problem. If you can find a single verified situation where this is the case, then I'll gladly concede the point.

My thoughts on the problem? Either throttling, or some background process (Virus scan, messenger, etc) momentarily trying to grab system time for some reason. Make sure to shutdown everything in the background that you can, and do a spyware/Adware scan, just in case.

Right on. I'm getting tired of it too. I read a post somewhere in here yesterday where a guy said that the powersupply is THE most important piece of equipment in a computer. LOL.

I think it's probably not working because you made a mistake in thinking you OC'd it to 500mhz and opened up 25 pipelines .

Powersupply does seem a bit low... but as not good as it is it shouldnt cause these problems. Try to return your OC's back to stock and see what happens.... if nothing try better cooling options.

rofl. You know, I was surprised to find that she's quite adept at playing halo 2. Never would have thought. I don't think it's the prostitution that took it's toll; the other day she said 'left home country, son embarrass family, try to put goat into computer, keep say he is hacksohr'

And we all know the CDrom drive is the most important part of the computer.

By the way, where can I find info on how to calculate how much power you can put on all the rails of the PSU? I barely remember the TEC101 explanation of watts, volts, resistance, etc.

I would check the heat sink and make sure there is not dust in it. A dusty heat sink will heat the gpu up and then it will slow down. Also check all your case intake fans make sure they are clean as well. Reduced air flow in the case itself can cause it as well.

Why is that so funny? The PSU powers every component in your machine so wouldn't it stand to reason that it's one of if the the most important components?
