HELP!!!!

Hi, quick help, system specs are 2.8ghz P4, 1gb ram, radeon 9000, and sound blaster live....the problem is, sometimes, (alot of times actually) ill be playing music, or whatever, and a game, or another program that makes sound, and for what ever reasons, the computer locks up and the sound freezes and makes a rancid sound on my speakers//headphones...thought it might be sound related since everytime it happens theres more than 1 sound going on.... :/

check the device manager first. make sure that the sound card started up correctly and there are no conflicts. minor hardware conflicts can wreak havoc on whatever starts up after the problematic device
