this is my first time installing anything on a computer. when i put the p4p800 asus mobo in the case, the back holes for plugs don't all have access. do i just take the square of metal off so that all ports are accessable? i have the antec sonata and again the p4p800

Yes, take the square metal off. Usually the motherboard comes with a replacement metal piece made for it.

Would I set the primary ide master to my dvdr, and the slave to my hard drive? And then the secondary ide master would be the cdr/dvd rom?

How many hard drives do you have? If that is your only HD then you need to set it as IDE1 Master, but if you are using an SATA drive as your main then that's fine.

I have a hard drive, a cdr/dvd rom, and a dvd-r(I will mostly be using this only to burn dvd's).

i was thinking
hard drive-ide 1 master
cdr/dvd rom-ide 2 master
dvd-r-ide 2 slave
or
hard drive- ide 1 master
dvd-r -ide 1 slave
cdr/dvd rom-ide 2 master

allright I have been in electronics and I know that the black wire is negative and also ground. In my antec sonata user manual it says this, but in my asus mobo guide for the p4p800 it says that black wires usually connect to the positive lead. Any help? This makes me skeptical to plug it in.

if you are talking about the four pin power cable, it only fits in one way, so dont worry about it. If it is indeed wired wrong (chances are about 0) i am sure the warrentee with cover it. But i have never heard of anything like this ever happening.
