Has anyone had any trouble with an ABIT IC7-MAX3, 2 sticks of Kingston 512MB DDR PC3200, and a Western Digital Special Edition 120GB 7200 IDE Hard Drive. I am building my first computer and I am wondering if all these things will work together.

heya Hiperson;

If it were me i would buy Samsung modules instead, all of the third party manufactures like kingston, cosair, etc all use samsung as their major supplier for the chips on their modules.

I would buy the Abit IS7 instead of the IC7, the IC7 isnt noticably faster then the IS7, the only difference is the chipset, and Abit enabled their own version of PAT on the IS7 and it works just as well as intels PAT on the IC7.

I would recommend the Hitachi 7k250 if you can afford it the performance is outstanding and head and shoulders above the rest. The only other SATA drive on par with the 7K250 in performance is the WD Raptor, unfortunately the max size for those drives is 74GB, and the raptor is designed more for file serving it isnt that great for gaming and other normal everyday programs.

I don't use IC7's, but I support a dealer who's customers have insisted on them. He's had many problems with various PC3200, including Kingston. The IC7 overstresses any RAM that isn't using fairly conservative timings. That includes the Max3.

If you really HAVE to go with the IC7-Max3, get better RAM (or preferably FASTER RATED RAM), but I'd personally save some money and get the Abit IS7 (full version IS7, not the -E, V, etc). If you REALLY need GIGABIT LAN instead of 10/100, I'd go with the IS7-G (not the -E, V, etc).

You could use the money you saved (around $90) to get FASTER RAM if you liked, that would give you some room to overclock.

Don't get too carried away here! If you are going to use the Performance Modes on the IS7 you need CAS 2 ram! Even the Turbo mode is tough to get into without it. The 875 chipset will be a little more forgiving. I doubt Samsung will make the cut unless you're buying the new chips in OCZ flavor or the new Mushkin 222 Special. Once you get above a 235mhz FSB, timings like 2.5,3,3,7 are blazing, but you'll never see them in Turbo, Street Racer, or F1 modes! :frown:

Abit IS7 - 2.8C @ 3.30 - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
