I just recieved my Maxtor D740X 40gig ata/133 7.2k FDB HDD. I planned on hooking it up as the secondary master, copying my old HDD onto it (including windows xp). In windows it showed up in the device manager, but not in my computer, giving me no access to it. I opened partion magic 6.0 and it says there's a 38gigs of unformatted space and the rest unallocated. It won't let me format it, or get rid of the unallocated space. I cannot format it from BIOS and do not have easy access to the windows xp CD. How an I format it, and get it to be the actual 40gigs.

You didn't know the "Math"? 40GB is 38GB. Take 40,000 and divide it by 1024. Now you only have 39GB. Take away the small amount of space for the file system info, and remember that they probably rounded up in the first place, now your at 38GB.

By now you're probably wishing you had ask more questions first!
