HELPP!!! AMD FX-8350 running about 40-45 idle, 80 degrees Prime95?!??!?!

Hello guys,

I need some really experienced guys here with this problem.


I just got this processor today, took off my old, applied new thermal paste etc. ( I did it proper I've done this a tons of times before.)

( I had the x955 BE 3.2 before this one, and it ran really good at idling temperatures of 30 degrees celsius and load on 55 max. )

When its (the vishera) idling its about 40-45 degrees CELSIUS!!! (ambient temperature around 20 degrees celsius...)
I tried different apps, one says cpu temp is around 20 degrees and the other one says 45, more likely the one which shows 45 is more accurate.

Now the problem is not the idling, but when I fire up prime95 the temperatures skyrocket in an instant to around 70-80, I shut down the pc after it got close to 80 because I didn't want to take the risk.



So whats the problem?

What did I do??:
I reapplied the thermal paste like 5 times, but with the same results.
Also changed the directions of my cooler, but still the same results.
Before anyone asks it again, YES I AM 100% SHURE I SEATED THE HEATSINK PROPERLY FOR GODS SAKE!

Tried another cooler (stock cooler), same results.
I checked my bios, it's the same.
I updated my bios, no difference.
I reseated the CPU chip, no difference.
I threw my PC through the window, no just joking.

I used Aida64 PRO, CPUIDHW Monitor Pro etc etc

Aida and CPUIDHW give the most accurate readings. But how the hell is this possible? It's a brand new cpu, There is no possible thing I can think of

Thermal Paste: Artic MX-2
Case : Xigmatek Asgard II
FX8350
Scythe Samurai ZZ cooler
GTX560 ASUS(OCII)
2x4 gb Corsair vengeance high profile
ASRock Extreme 4 970
Huntkey 700W PSU

1WD 1tb
1 SSD 120gb Intel 520

No I disabled that good for nothing function, but still get the same results...
The problem is my load temperature in Prime95, it skyrockets over 75 degrees.
Maybe its a reading error? When I feel the heat sinks they dont burn my fingers, they are quite warm, but not as warm as I would suspect from 75 degrees...

Its running around 2300/2400 RPM, I am 100% sure that I installed it properly as I said earlier, I have done this 100s of times for friends and family. I have actually a lot knowledge about pc parts, but this is driving me crazy. I feel its giving off heat (the cooler) so there is nothing wrong with the contact between cpu and cooler. Still that doesnt explain why it's running almost 80 degrees celsius when on prime95

Ok, I just tried what you said, but it doesn't wobble, it goes smooth and doesnt wobble at all...
So do you have any other suggestions?

I have the same motherboard as you running an FX8320 with a Noctua NH-D14.

From my experience with this setup ive come to the conclusion that the VRM's, more so the VRM cooling, is very inadequate for these 8 core cpu's.

Running prime95 at stock clocks/volts (turbo boost disabled) my cpu get to around 67 degrees and the vrm's get to around 76 degrees before thermal throttling kicks in.

I would suggest either getting an aftermarket cooler or undervolting.
I was able to lower my vcore voltage to 1.125v from 1.3v (stock), temps now for the cpu is around 57/58 degrees where as the vrms still hover around 73 degrees, which is low enough to avoid any throttling.

Edit: just realised you already have an aftermaket cooler.

@bouncedk, The first thing I did was putting the voltage on 1.30, i will try 1.280 dont know if it will work though.
Fan blowing does change the temperature, but only by 1/1,5 degree celsius.

Just dropped to 1.150v, temperature didnt change at all.. System starts up, but no change in temp...

Okay now here suddenly idle has dropped to 35c/38c, fired up the pc 1 hour ago... It only differs with 2/3 degrees each couple of minutes, but when I just tested it with prime again, it just skyrocketed over the 70's again :(.

Even dropped to 33 when I left the pc alone for another 10 mins...

I also downloaded overdrive to see my core temps but they are quickly varying from around 23/28.. So I don't know if this is thrustworthy,

I've also read that if you get ridiculously high readings with temp readers, you should go by core temp. Don't know if I should...

that 70+c temp must be backage temps which to me means that there must be some sort of inadaquite airflow behind the back of the motherboard/near the cpu esecially or even a bad sensor.



since its showing the individual core temps @ about 56 I wouldnt really worry about it but with a longer run it will no doubt go over the safe limit of 62c

I also found out that even with my overclock my vrms were reaching about 70c I put a small fan on the back blate for main vrm and it cooled down almost 10c under full load.

But this shouldn't be happening right? Because everything is on stock, I even dropped the voltage... It should run at safe temps with a stock cooler, especially an aftermarket one. So you are suggesting that I take of the right side of my case and apply a fan?

BTW, I touched my cooler, and it wasn't as hot as I expected, I could lay my hands for more then 10 seconds on it without burning my hand

Hello MesutOzil,
I have an identical setup,except I have an H80i.My VID reading in Coretemp is 1.350V.Now,this stays the same when running all programs (Haven't tried P95 on this setup yet).I noticed your reading to be significantly lower (1.275V).What I suggest,
a)Get a better cooler if you have the stock cooler.It is not enough.Update your BIOS to at least P2.20 if you haven't.
b) Head into BIOS,turn off all power saving functions.Make sure Turbo Core,APM,Cool 'n' Quiet and thermal throttling are turned off *.
c)Turn OC mode to manual.
d)In CPU Configuration,except Enable Secure state for win 8.1,turn off all settings *(do it if only you have adequate cooling,but do turn off Cool'n'Quiet).
e)Turn Muliplier/Voltage change to manual.
f) Leave everyhting at auto.As soon as you change the Mutiplier/voltage reading to manual,you will see the CPU Voltage changes to 1.350V.
Leave it at that.
g)Change the multiplier to x20.5 4100 Mhz.
h)Save it as 1st user default.
i)save changes and exit.

What I have tried to say is basically turn off all power saving functions,enable manual setting of the voltage and processor frequency.Try it only after getting a better cooler ,if you are using the stock cooler.

Absxiith, thanks for your input. At the moment my motherboard firmware is 2.50 (newest) I also have a aftermarket cooler (Scythe Samurai ZZ). I also turned off cool 'n quiet, turned off all powersaving things. Have even set my voltage to 1.125V so I don't know what to do next... How are your temps? And how were they when you ran a cooler?

Here is a screenshot of Core Temp (excuse my uploading it to tinypic,but I grabbed the first Google link that came along) of my FX 8350 at 4.1GHz,1.350V-

Cooled by an H80i in Quiet Mode.Now,I agree it's not at load,but yes,it's not idling at 40 either,so it should give you an idea of the temps.Now,before this,I was running a Cooler Master Hyper TX 3 Evo(I skipped using the Stock Cooler),with all power saving functions on and thermal throttling on.My idle temps were okay (around 30C) but my load temps were around 55 C,while gaming.
1)Do you still have the stock cooler/any other cooler?Try swapping the Samurai out and using that,after cleaning the old thermal paste with IsoPropyl Alcohol completely and seating the replacement cooler properly ,so that the base of the heatsink is in proper contact with the CPU surface.
2)And are you turning the screws of the Scythe Cooler (if there are any screws) very tightly/a bit loose?Turn them till they feel firm (do not use excessive force)
3)Just hoping it's a bug with HWMonitor,but your System fans are all at 0 RPM?Check to be sure.
4) Use this tool to calculate your Cooler's Approx . C/W rating -

5) And which voltage are you setting to 1.125V?The stock Core voltage is 1.3500V.Your reading is too low,it gives a 94w OC wattage at stock settings?Check for yourself,something's not right.

Post your results with a stock cooler here.You can compare your results with a stock cooler with other members and see if there is a problem with your Cooler /CPU /some setting on the motherboard/fans/thermal grease.
