Well, I never really have problems with my video card; it has always treated me very well. I have a PowerColor 9700 Pro. I sometimes have it overclocked, but in this instance I did not. I was playing Call of Duty last night when the video froze. The sound kept going, then the video flickered and the resolution went to 640x480. Next the video went away altogether and the monitor lost signal (no vga signal detected). I rebooted and my desktop was at 800x600x16. I continued playing but it happened again and again. I figured that it was the new driver and that I would just reinstall it. I went to the control panel and removed the driver with the uninstall utility, then rebooted. On reboot, the computer came back up and was completely non functional. I couldn't access the hard disk from the explorer, my computer, or the command prompt. I couldn't run the device manager or make anything else work at all. I ended up reinstalling XP because I didn't really have anything to lose.
I am a little puzzled as this was a clean install and had shown no signs of instability. I had jsut removed the Cat 3.8s and installed the 3.9s. This was my first experience with them. I have everything installed and configured again, and have had no problems. Any idea what happened?
Here is my configuration
XP1700+ @ 2200 mhz (200x11)
Abit NF7-S v2.0
2x256 Mushkin High Perf 2:2:2 @ 2-2-2-5
PowerColor 9700 Pro
Linksys WMP54G wireless NIC
WD 30Gb HDD (old and needs to be upgraded)
Lite-On 48x32x48x16 Combo drive
