Actually Verizon FIOS (fiber-optic Internet, TV & VOIP telephone) already has an iPhone app for remote-control of their smart-home system, which is an additional-cost item. Of course they also have an ordinary Internet app for the same thing, so you don't need an iPhone in particular.

Anyway, you can program your security system, check and turn on/off appliances, lights, furnace or AC settings, TV's and just about anything else in your house. I didn't buy that add-on service however so I don't know the particulars. However the sales dude did tell me that it's pretty fool-proof, in the sense that it doesn't let you turn up the heat in summer or the AC when the outside temp is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, or turn off your fridge, etc.

I got my wife an iPhone 4S for our wedding anniversary (and then got talked into trying FIOS at the Verizon store - sneaky bums!) , and have played around with Siri (when she lets me use her phone that is 😛). It seems to be a bit smarter than the speech-recognizer in her Honda Pilot, which has never worked for me. But I find it far easier to push buttons than go through the training period with the one in the car. Siri seems to semi-work from the start.
