My knowledged of the Hero/Champion system(s) is either negligible or
extremely spotty. I am hoping that the Hero experts can improve my
understanding.

A friend of mine (even less exposed to the Hero system than I am) is
tremendousy impressed , and rightly so, with Hudson City: The Urban
Abyss. He (and I as one of his potential players) needs to know if Dark
Champions is a stand alone game or does it require Hero 5 and/or the
Champions supplement to play? Also, could the 4th Edition Champion
rules be used with 5th Edition material? And finally, is there-probably
developed by one of you-a Very Very Hero Lite edition of the current
rules (a Champiions For Dummies, if you will), something like
Wildstrike, that would obviate the impressive expense of buying the
latest edition of Hero and whatever else is necessary to roleplay in
Hudson City? Thanks for the assistance.

Dark Champions is not a stand alone, it is only a genre book. You will need
a Hero 5 set of rules to play. you will not need a Champions book as this is
also a genre book. As fore the 4th vs. 5th I can not answer because I never
played 4th version of Hero but from what I have heard the main difference
are balance issues, but I may be wrong on that. As for the Hero lite, there
is a Hero Sidekick that has all the rules minus the examples. Check here for
the differences http://herogame.dans.cust.servlets.net/SideKick/index.jsp .
this is a much cheaper than the full rules $9.99 vs. $50 (for the revised
5th) .

Hope this helps

Unlike the old Hero genre books, the new generation are just that: GENRE
books. They may contain some special rules or advice on adapting the
standard rules for that genre, but they are not complete systems in
themselves.

As noted, the lite edition of Hero is called Sidekick. It sells for $9.99,
and has most of the core system rules; a few of the more problematic Powers
and Advantages are left out, but there is a sidebar list telling you about
that. 5th Edition is about 95% compatible with 4th Edition. There are some
additions and a few changes, but mostly voluminous clarifying text intended
to settle a number of long-standing rules disputes.

There is a useful discussion of the changes between 4th and 5th edition
Hero at http://theemerged.blogspot.com/HERO425.htm

If you don't want to use 4th Edition, Sidekick is your best bet at $10
(or $7 in PDF format from the Hero Games online store).

What sort of things were in that other 5%? I'm a 4th Ed. player from
about 10 years back, and remember submitting several suggestions for
5th, but then got out of roleplaying. Just curious...

Off the top of my head:

A few cost changes, (most notably aid).

Transforms became cumulative for free, with 'all or nothing' a limitation.

You no longer buy things like always on growth.

Talents are now built as powers.

Luck is a power in and of itself, as are healing aids.

Many options from 4ed supplements were rolled into the main book.

Scads of examples for powers.

Oh, and:

Stephen Long screwed up the optional speed change rule, and shows no
evidence of even realising he changed it. :}
