When I work across my XP in-home network, the cursor keeps pausing in
email for example. Or if I want to click on something there is often a
hesitation. I assume something is running, but I don't find anything. How
can I
locate it and turn it off or get it out of the way?
It's not the ordinary stuff. I wonder if it could be my smc wireless
adapter.

Hi,
Usually the wireless networking products and wireless hardware like
keuboard and mouse in the same frequency of 2.4GHz. I think the SMC wireless
adapter might be causing the problem. To verify this just disable the
wireless network connection or unlpug the adpater and see for any difference.

if thats the case please provide some information about the kind of mouse
you have i may suggest you something

Regards,
Jose

Here we are almost a month after your thoughts. Guess what? When Linksys
finally came out with a G usb adapter I bought one and the hesitation is
gone! You are correct.
