[SOLVED] hey guys what should I upgrade on my pc to be able to buy and use one of the new 30 series graphics cards

I currently have this pre-built pc I bought about 3 years ago

the only change I made to it is a 1TB SSD.

what should I upgrade in order to use an RTX 30 series graphics card on my rig ? Also if you guys could recommend specific brands or models for those upgrades that would be amazing thanks!

Depends on the RTX 30 series card in question. 170W for the RTX 3060, 350W for the RTX 3080Ti/3090

GTX 1070 is a little variable, but on the low end 150W. So in that regard the RTX3060 or 3060Ti should drop right in no problem.

Thermaltake Smart isn't the best PSU out there, so if you wanted an upgrade, maybe consider something like a Corsair RM750x, RM850x if you are going for a 3070Ti and up.


They don't list the motherboard, but if it is a B350 board you can upgrade to a Ryzen 3000 series chip. If it is a B450 motherboard the potential is there for a Ryzen 5000 series chip.

I'm not sure what memory they put in there, but that is likely another spot you could gain significant performance. Ryzen responds well to fast memory.

The wattage you will need is primarily gated by your graphics card.

I have no problem over provisioning a PSU a bit. Say by 20%.
Perhaps more since 3000 series cards can have big power spikes.
It will allow for a stronger future graphics card upgrade.
It will run cooler, quieter, and more efficiently in the middle third of it's range.
A PSU will only use the wattage demanded of it, regardless of it's max capability.

Buy only a quality psu. It is a long term investment.

Look for a unit with a 7 to 10 year warranty.
