i currently have an 8350 but as soon as i saw its comparison to the 4690k i wanted the 4690k is it really worth the price i have to pay for a new motherboard and cpu?
I've got an 8370 rig and have run it head to head with my 4770Ks as well as both 4670Ks and 4690Ks the Intel is better in every case with the possible exception of video rendering (and then it's so-so if OCing the Intel i5s. The 8350 was a decent match for the SB CPUs, lost some to the IB and even more to Haswells

It all depends on what he's doing. If he's playing games the difference between those two processors is little to none. If he wants more fps it's better to invest his money to a GPU. It simply doesn't worth it to pay for a new processor AND a new motherboard while the difference, as I said above, is little to none for gaming. If he already have a good GPU, then it's better to invest in components like an SSD, more RAM, case fans etc.
If you talk gaming, Intel is far and away better. I know a number of people that have full blown system based on 8320/8350 that have upgraded to Intel and use the AMD as a backup system or hand it down to their kids or sell it to recoup some of the Intel expenditure
