The back ground is that after a long break from PC gaming I built a machine largely from 2nd hand parts specifically to play Elite Dangerous. Now at the moment I can play it fine on my old Samsung syncmaster at 60+ FPS at 1080p on Ultra, my question is if I upgrade to a 1440P 27" IPS Monitor will I still be able to enjoy the game at Ultra settings over say 50+FPS?

I currantly have an OC fx 6300 on a H100I OC is to 4.8 I can go higher but need to put 1.5V in to get to a stable 5GHZ Its at 1.24 at the moment. I also have a HD 6990 with the massive artic cooler on it (bought for only 75.00!!) I have OC this to 980MHz leaving the memory at the stock OC Bios but its very noisey as the fans have to stay on at 100% So would prefer to leave this at stock.

I'm not interested in buying any further hardware as I am only interested in playing ED. I have waited for such a long time since the original and want to enjoy it as best I can.

Thanks for any input.

Having just upgraded to a 1440p monitor myself recently, I can say that you will see some framerate drop at the higher resolution, but it's hard to say how much exactly since so many factors play into it. My guess is that since you play at 60 FPS currently, it will hit in the 45-50 FPS range at 1440p, but there's no guarantee of that. Most likely though, if it drops lower than that mark, you could twitch one or two settings down a notch and get back to your 50-60 FPS range while still playing at high to ultra range settings.
