i am currently running a gtx 7501gd5 and recently have started to take interest in gaming. My question is regarding my psu(proprietary lenovo psu 610w, with 12v rails rated at 18A, which equals to 216w of power delivery) will it power a gtx 1080 or 1070ti/1070 requiring a 8pin pcie connector(my psu has 2 x 6 pin).

To be clear i dont want to buy any adapters, b/c of previous mishaps and experimentations. Also ilive in pakistan and pc component prices are sky high , bought this rig about year ago for around $270(excluding the gpu). For comparison the i5 8400 cost $260 and Amd is not even available here. therefore cant really enjoy the new stuff from intel or amd.

System specs:
xeon 1660 v2 (6c/12t @ stock)
4 x 4gb ddr3 @ 1333mhz,
gigabyte OC gtx 1050 1gb ddr5,
WD green 5400rpm 1tb sata.

Thanking you for future your responses.

If the power supply only has two 6-pin PCIE (75 watts each) power connectors, then it's not designed to power any graphics card that requires an 8-pin PCIE (150 watts) power connector. Unless you can afford a new power supply (and if it's compatible with your Lenovo), stay with what you have.

okay lets start with facts;

according to NVIDIA : https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/10series/geforce-gtx-1070-ti/

A 1070/1070ti will require a 6+2 Pin PUS power connector, will require 180W (and I have a 1060 and while gaming it will go over 250W) and nvidia recommend a 500W PSU.

Likely you will need to also check if the 1070 can fit in your case, height and length wise (1070/1070ti cads are 4.5" high x 6.5" long)
Personally I dont think getting a 1080 isn't needed unless your running anything over 1080p

1060 6GB is the highest I'd go with that PSU, anything above that is too risky. And you would need to particularly search for a model with a single 6 pin power connector, since there are also OC models with 8 pins.

Thank you for replying so quickly to my post. So anyways i'm oppressed that my rig cant handle a decent gpu and according to your expertise i should not go above a gtx 1060...and you're right, many benchmarks agree with you.

So with my budget (usd $600) should i buy a newer i7, b/c the benchmarks have convinced to do as such. Pretty sure i can sell my current pc for decent cash to increase my budget overall, and i'm further convinced after scouting the local hardware market as i've found a surplus of ibuypower/origin/cyberpower skylake prebuilts going for averagely $480 usd for the following:
i7 6700k,
8gig ddr4 2400,
650w seasonic 80+ psu,
z170 mobo and oem casing.

..............Decently used rx 580 8gig/gtx 1060 6gig can be had for roughly $250........So with the aforementioned parts listed here should i go for it, would i see substantial fps improvements as compared with my xeon 1660 v2. Also should i buy a gtx 1060 usd right now or wait for navi or gtx 1160/1170, but i heard their are going to be expensive AF and even moreso here in pakistan.

Awaiting your replies!!
