Hi, I have a dell optiplex 780, has this got a built in mic or do I have to buy one and plug it in

The Optiplex model you've stated doesn't come with a built in mic. According to the system's manual on page 3 there is a 3.5mm Microphone port available for population both at teh front and at the back. Ont he rear it's demarcated with the Pink/Blue port

(located under the red box)...while the front panel connection has a mic port embossed onto the chassis fascia on the far left.
