Are you talking about a DVD/amp unit in one and those 5.1 speakers connected to that? Get a new amp for the speakers.

You can find many used surround sound receivers for cheap. Like 1/3 - 1/4 new prices.

Other issue, do those speakers have normal speaker connections or are they some custom Sony connector made for the system?

They are the standard normal 5+ sub woofer speakers
