Help! Please! Is it simpler and better to connect VGA to VGA rather than buy an adaptor when hooking up an HP elitebook 840 G4 laptop without an HDMI port to a sony bravia TV that has both options?

your advice will be much appreciated.

Every conversion, IMHO, degrades the image. If all you have is a VGA output, and your device has a VGA input, connect these.
