the colord ports on most pc and connected to the onboad sound chipset. if they put in a sound card those ports get turned off.

That is just a regular 3.5 mm jack, unless the headset it broken, it should work just fine. The audio recording device is not the headphone that is not being picked up, it's the actual input device that the headphone connects to, meaning the input option on the sound card.

Did you re-install the sound card driver from Dell's support page?

Test the mic in the sound options, you should see something under the Recording tab when it's plugged in. When you talk, the input level should move.

Have you tried connecting the microphone to the 'line in' input of the system and selecting 'line in' as your default input device in Control Panel?

Okay. Well, give this a try.

First, turn down the volume on the computer to about fifty percent. We don't need ear-drums problems that could render this entire exercise irrelevant.

Right click on the volume icon.

Select 'Recording devices'.

Click on the top one and click on Properties.

Select the Listen tab and check the Listen to this device' box.

Select the Levels tab and boost the volume a little.

Do the same for all the 'Recording devices'.

If you find one that works, set it as default and stop the other devices from being listened to, if you want.

Any improvement?
