Hi Please Help Me

Hi i have tryed once of OC my computer before and i failed missrably.
I am looking to overclock my CPU which is a Q6600 to 3GHz but i am a complete noob to overclocking. Everytime i have tried it so far my computer fully crashs and i have to take the battery off my motherboard to reset it.
My PC specs are below and i am running my computer off just fan cooling. At the moment my PC is running at 2.4GHz x 4 with a system temp in its low 20's and CPU in its mid 20's (Degrees Celcius)

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 4094MB RAM
Hard Drive: 500 GB Total
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Ultimate (6.0, Build 6000) (6000.vista_gdr.071023-1545)
Motherboard: Asus Striker II Formula

Any other questions about my system or anything dont hessitate to ask.
P.S. Remember i am a complete novice to OC'ing and know very little about the Bios (i have the most recent BIOS installed)

yeah thats what i was trying last time and i keep **** it up my whole system crashes. i got my PC last XMAS spend about £1100 on my towers but i keep messing it up when it comes to OCing it dont know how to do it, had a read but its still not clear to me.

What we would also need from you is what motherboard you are using, ram specs and if you are using a aftemarket HSF Cooler. Then we can help you out more.

You should be able to reach 3.0 GHz with the stock HSF and stock or near stock voltages.
