I have two routers connected to each other by wire, First Router directly to Internet and with no wifi facility, other is being used as AP [D-Link DIR 600L], in my room.

I want to trun wifi ON at second router (AP), without turning on Wifi on my First router (main router).

Kindly let me know how to do it,

It sounds like your issue is that you have not properly set up your AP. The LAN ports work as they are a simple switch and your wireless radio is on but it is not acting as a wireless AP. The should be connected LAN port to LAN port if you want them on the same network. DHCP must be turned off in the AP unit.

Check your settings so that they conform to this setup:

In your main router you must either give the AP unit a...
Each wifi router has its own Management interface. Normally the IP address that you type into your browser is written in the manual of the router or at the bottom of the router with a sticker. I would temporarily switch the other router off so you dont accidentally connect to the wrong router.

There is some more help on this here: http://www.andrefaca.com/d-link-dir-600-quick-setup-guide-and-micro-review-24/

Once you figured out what is your password, you need to enable the wifi in one of the menus there. You should enable password protection e.g. WPA2 in order for your neighbours not to be able to access your internet and your stuff.

Hope this helps.

Thank Gabor,

I have turned on Wife in my AP router but with "No Internet Access". My question is how to activate wifi connection in second router (AP) without turning WIFI ON in main router.

Rember that my router is configured as AP and getting IP from main router, where WIFI is off.

Is it possible to get WIFI facily on AP without turning it on at main Router. ?

Router is accessible , That is not my issue

I am connected to second router (AP) through wifi but unable to brows any thing.

Why, ?

I believe since Wifi on main router is not ON , therefore I can use inter net from AP router. ?

What do you say ?

Hi,

As far as I know you dont have to enable Wifi for the AP to get the Data from the first router.
- Does the internet work while connecting to the first Router?

You need to make sure the two routers dont have an IP address clash. I.e. one could be 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2
I am not 100% certain how to achieve what you are asking but you might have to specify your access point. I have a similar setup at home and I did not have to enable wifi on the Internet router.

Dear Gaborbarla,

Thank you for your reply,

My internet is working fine through cable (AP router to PC), but via Wifi it is not working, it shows connected I am unable to brows.

Reason I don't know ?

Im guessing here but maybe you are losing your gateway settings when you are connecting via wifi.

If your internet router is configured as a DHCP your PC will automatically set itself to the correct gateway etc (if you selected Obtain IP Address Automatically). Perhaps the second router dishes out new IP to your computer on the Wifi and the gateway is no longer the Internet Router's IP.

Maybe have a look if you can switch off DHCP on the AP router (Wifi).

In your main router you must either give the AP unit a static address or a reserved dynamic address (if the main router supports address reservation). To do either you need the AP unit MAC address. If you have to use a static address it must be in the network range but outside of the main router DHCP service. (example if the main router is 192.168.0.1 make the AP 192.168.0.2 and start the main router DHCP assignable range at 192.168.0.3 up to .128 or .254 or any other number less than .254 that gives you enough addresses).

When you set up the AP do it by connecting a computer to an LAN port and disconnect everything else from it. Once you change its IP address to match that given in the main router, you will have to use that address to enter the AP unit configuration pages. Once the AP unit is fully configured you can attach it back to the main router Ethernet cable .

The rest of this only applies if you decide to leave the main router wireless radio working. The radio channel should be different from the main router (selecting from the three non-overlapping channels 1, 6, 11), but the SSID, security type and passphrase should be the same.
