Hibernations

I have quite an interesting issue happening with WindowsMe. When I first did a clean install, *while* installing (More specifically, during the PnP detection), I was getting kernel errors which showed enough. Obviously, once I finally got into Me, it was absolutely screwed up.

So, I stopped by a friends' and downloaded the latest BIOS for my Abit KA7. I noticed that it fixed some '95 issues, so I figured while I'm in a Windows installing mood, I might as well pull out OSR2 and give it a shot. (The one that claimed USB support but still never worked properly.)

It was great ... to a point. It was nice to have a lean OS like that, even though I didn't use Explorer as my shell. (I just use Task Manager and Command Prompt. Less memory is consumed, it's far more stable, not to mention I prefer running things via command line than clicking all over the place.)

Back to '95... OpenGL performance was extremely screwy. I mean, I was getting higher frame rates in DX based games like UT and Rune. (3DMark2k had an extra 120 pts.) yet, I would get about 30 fps in Q3A on my GeForce2 MX. (I got well over 60 in my 98SE installation pre-Me.) Not to mention, I missed having the high poll rate my Intellimouse Optical offered when hooked up to my USB port. So, I decide to give upgrading to Me a shot because if it didn't work, I'd revert back to 98SE.

Well, it works like a charm. I'm typing it under Me (Still with Task Manager and Command Prompt as my shell.), however my problem is Hibernation. The Power Management Settings under the control panel reveal no Hibernation tab like I've seen on other computers with Me installed. Obviously, when I go go to Shut Down Windows from Taskman, my only selections are Shut Down, Restart, Stand By. When I run Msconfig, however, and click the Advanced button, it tells me "Standby feature is enabled. Hibernation feature is enabled."

So, I know my computer can do it. Windows knows it can do it. But it *won't* do it, and I think the primary cause is I upgraded from Windows 95, and that's probably something they (Microsoft) didn't look into.

So, what I'm essentially asking is ... Is there a registry entry or something else I can do without having to do a clean install of Me (Sakes, I'll never do that again.), yet preserve Hiberation features? Because, despite what most people think, I think Me is a lot better than 98SE once you actually get it work. And, yes, in case you're wondering, the shell being used is irrelivent for Hibernation. I temporarily switch back to Explorer as my shell, and it didn't reveal any Hibernation features.

So, in essence, Hibernation functions aren't absolutely necessary, I'd just like to get to the bottom of this. Because, it's just really cool.

I also recently noticed that the Hibernation feature was missing even though it was said to be enabled.

There was the possibility that you mobo, etc didn't support it but since msconfig tells you it is enabled then your CPU does support it. I am 99% sure it is a driver issue. With me, my CPU was loading a .VxD version of my sound card drivers, as soon as I upgraded to the WDM version my Hibernate option and tab magically appeared again.

Here's how to check why you can't use the hibernate option. Go to Start->Run

In the Open field type "nohiber.txt" w/o the "'s of course and hit enter. This should open the file and tell you the reason(s) that hibernation is unable to run on your CPU.

Let me know if this works, it worked for me.

Indeed, to quote nohiber.txt

"Hibernation disabled because hibernate is not supported by the audio driver- emu10k1.vxd."

Well, I guess the only relevance it has to the Windows 95 upgrade is I'm using the LiveWare! Driver that came with my sound card. I'll just install the one that comes with Windows Me and give it a shot.

Again, that's a bunch. :) I really appreciate it. I'm 99% certain it will work now. 😛
