I transferred all my files to an external harddrive and one of the folders was hidden(I think I made it viewable because I could see it when I opened the harddrive) I then formatted the HDD thinking I would not need it. Later I put all my files BUT the hidden one on the HDD due to my laptop being taken for a fresh install of windows 8. I am trying to recover that folder, all other files appear BUT that folder. Please help it had photos of my deceased loved one. I know I should have backed it up and it is my fault. I appreciate any help given. Thank you.
P.S. I have already tried icare and stellar phoenix

If thats the case then its probably gone.
In the time since you last had hidden the folder on the external you had deleted it, formatted the external, and copied files onto it - possibly/probably overwriting the space that the hidden folder used to occupy.

I fear you may need a specialist service.

Have you tried recovering the folder from the source drive? The one you used to transfer it to the external?
Recuva is a program that will find lots of deleted files.
But you need a second hard drive for it to write what it finds on.
It will find files that are full, partial, etc.
As long as the file has not been written over too many times or the portion of the drive where it exists is not windows protected it will most likely find most of your pictures,
Just don't be surprised at the old files it does find.

Hi

To avoid misunderstanding are the external hard drive and HDD the same or different?
One of the best programs for recovering pictures is Testdisk / PhotoRec pair
From CGsecurity.org

It will usually loose file names and folder names
But this will only work if you have not copied files onto drive after formatting
Whether files or folders hidden will not matter
It searches each sector for header record of jpg and other picture format.
Then copies files off to a new location

If you recovered other files back to same drive they came from rather than a different drive you may have over written the files you are looking for

If the pictures are really important consider going to a data recovery specialist on a no win no fee contract?

Best of luck

Yes, If you are not sure of how to use those data recovery applications then bring it to the pros if you want better chances of getting those files back and willing to pay the costs of their recovery service.
