Hi I'm planning to build a gaming and small time 3D rendering rig the budget is basically under $2000 at most $2200. Also I'm from Australia so yeah!

I'm wondering what components I should get?

I7-4790K?
GTX970?

Most importantly, what resolution do you intend to use and do you want to sli? Also if you're spending so much money I would advise waiting for skylake for improved performance and ddr4.
Anyway, here it is:

16 GB for the rendering, 500 GB of SSD and 1 TB HDD since it can fit in the budget. For the GPU I chose the 980 ti, the best gamer GPU on the market right now. You have the option to sli with that mobo, but if you really plan on sli'ing, I recommend choosing a 1000W or higher PSU, like the HX1000i or the 1000 G2. Anyway, it's a monster build. You dont need to spend more than this.

1080p and probably not SLI. Also skylake is aimed at laptops and phones and isn't supposed to have much of a gaming performance upgrade. Also DDR4 has much higher latency and not much of an improved performace.

Ok, then the build above is good to go, you just change the Extreme4 to a MSI Z97 PC Mate, which is cheaper and you spare more money. Ooh, I forgot its AUS dollars, let me update build.

Ok, Im really sorry, didnt notice it was in AUD currency, anyway you will still have the same gaming performance, no change on that but maybe a little bit slower 3d rendering depending on the demand, because it 8GB of RAM and not 16GB, but not much difference:

What if I change the 980 ti to a 970. Then I can have more RAM and better CPU and can SLI later on if I need to?
