[SOLVED] High CPU temperature and low GPU temperature

Hello,

I recently bought a RTX 2070 to upgrade my GTX 970, uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers and got it working, but now my idle temperature and temperature under load are much higher for my CPU. It's around 50-60 degrees celcius when idle and it reaches 85-90 degrees celcius when playing BF5 while my GPU doesn't even reach 60 degrees. Performance has also gone down in other games, but it's mainly BF5 where my CPU reaches 90 degrees celcius.

Specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Armor 8GB
Intel Core i7 4790k
8GB DDR3 ram dual channel RAM
Asus H97-Pro Gamer
144hz 1ms Asus Monitor and 60hz Samsung monitor
MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Armor 8GB
550 watt Corsair PSU

I don't know what the issue is. Do i just need to apply new thermal paste, do i need to add extra fans or is there a bottleneck?

I'm not sure if i'm using the ray tracing version of the game or not. My CPU has the default cooler that came with it i believe. I could add some extra fans to my pc if this makes a big difference.

Using something like MSI Afterburner, check the CPU usage vs the GPU usage. If the CPU temp is above throttle range, the CPU will slow down. That would have the effect of bottlenecking the GPU and keeping its temps low.

As to the CPU temp, I suspect there may be something wrong with the stock cooler if the idle temp is 50-60C. One of the 4 push-posts may have come unseated and the cooler is not making firm contact with the CPU. Or the fan my be failing and not coming up to RPM. Idle temps should be in the mid-upper 30Cs with that CPU and stock cooler. (assuming you don't live in a really hot climate)

The stock cooler (if working correctly) should keep the CPU cores under Intel's recommended max of 74C even at 100% Usage. Did you disconnect anything else or make any other changes when you swapped gfx cards?

Solution

No, i only disconnected my old GPU and put in the new one. I also took out drive cage that was unused and not needed, which should make the air flow in my case even better. My CPU is at a constant 85-90C when in BF5, and my idle temperature has dropped to the 45-55C range which i assume is still too high. I will check my CPU cooler to see if it's properly making contact with the CPU, otherwise i will buy a new CPU cooler whenever i can.
