Hello there! I just bought a laptop MSI GE65 9SE. Its working flawlessly but the CPU goes to 94-98 degrees Celsius when playing heavy games like Metro Exodus etc.

I've tried undervolting the CPU by -0.170V, tried putting the laptop on a flat surface with much room for air but to no avail. The core 0 and core 2 always hit 95 degrees however the other cores remain at 80 degrees max.

Can anyone suggest me a solution which doesn't involve unscrewing the back and re-applying thermal paste?

Solution
On my MSI laptop there is a turbo fan button to put the fans at full speed, sounds like a jet engine but keeps the laptop cool while gaming. I also replaced the thermal compound on the cpu and gpu which also helped in cooling it down.
Okay! I finally solved the problem by using Throttlestop and reducing the Core 0 and core 2 turbo boost from 44 and 43 to 43 and 42 respectively. (I reduced them by one) Now the performance is exactly the same as before but the temperatures went from 98-100 to 73-80. Man I can't believe I finally hit those marks! Just dropping this for anyone who's facing the same problem. Its a new laptop so someone might benefit from this!

So I'm having the same issue. In throttlestop I'm only seeing how do reduce by how many cores are in use, do you have a pic by chance of how you were able to set it specifically for core 0 and core 2?

Replying to my post after approximately 1.5 years. I finally got the temperature issue resolved.
It was never the thermal paste
OR the BIOS
OR the heatsink
OR the VRMs
OR software bugs
OR bad underclocking

It was simply THE FANS. The cooling fins were CLOGGED WITH DUST and the laptop couldn't breathe. I'm surprised that NOBODY ever suggested me to clean the fans. I've asked for help on tomshardware, MSI forums, tomsguide and other forums. Sadly nobody ever advised me to clean the fans. This is the complete list of the things I have now done to solve the issue.

  1. THOROUGHLY CLEANED THE FANS. Don't just blow air on the fans, OPEN THEM until the fins are exposed and clean them with a soft toothbrush.
  2. Repasted with Thermal Grizzy Kryonaut
  3. Repasted the VRMs with K5 PRO Vicious thermal grease
  4. Bought a Havoc Laptop cooler (for better air flow)
  5. Applied an undervolt of -0.125

Temperatures are as follows:
CURRENT TEMPERATURES
Idle: 30-35 Celsius
Full load: 70-80 Celsius
Max CPU wattage goes to 80W.
Max clock speed: 4.0 Ghz (NO UNDERCLOCK)

PREVIOUS TEMPERATURES:
Idle: 50-60 Celsius
Full load: 95-105 Celsius
Max CPU wattage: 40W
Max clock speed: 2.6 (Turbo disabled)
