I have a desktop with an i5, gtx 1080, 16gb of ddr4, all games running on an ssd and am struggling to run games how I think I should. I have had this pc for a year or so without any issues, recently games aren't running well. The wakeup call was modern Warfare. I updated my drivers after struggling to even play. Adjusted my settings according to guides "best settings for performance" Still, it would randomly throttle and just not run smooth overall. I am an avid cs player. I was playing nuke on medium settings with AA off, running 80-100 fps. I should be able to peg it to 144 to maximize my monitor shouldn't I? On modern warfare my CPU usage was like 99%. I closed everything I could to lower it with minimal results. I ran a full scan on windows defender yielding no result for a virus but I feel I must have one. Any thoughts? I just wanna maximize my games and play them how I should be able to.

Solution
your i5 of whatever generation simply might not be capable of 144 fps for 144 Hz monitors, even if the GPU is capable of it.....; most opt for OC'd 8700K and 9700K these days at least when reaching for highest FPS...

The pre-8th gen i5's (4c/4t CPUs) are the most problem-plagued, as the lack of threads cause considerable dips in frame rates, leading to what many call 'i5-stutter'...

(100% CPU usage in itself is not an issue, if/as long as frame rates do not plummet at times to unacceptable levels)
Which i5 do you have?

The cpu prepares frames for the gpu adding toward cpu usages. Depending how busy a game is in other cpu oriented work, the cpu in use may not have enough resources to do everything + high fps.

Check temps and frequency that your cpu isnt being restricted.

Solution
Ran a scan with malwarebytes, no result and used cc cleaner. I understand that modern warfare may struggle. I just feel like cs go should definitely run over 100 fps
