Hey guys,
i have a GA-g31m-es2l (not sure which revision) paired with a q9400 and a R7 250.I can play most of the games i like fairly fine on it (gtav metro redux ect).Their is one game i love to play that i(and everyone else) has difficulty running,BeamngDrive. It actually doesn't run horribly but anyways im trying to see if i can add another 2gbs ddr2 ram to the system for a total of 6.The MB website says it maxes out at 4,but Ive now ran into 4 posts through hours of searching where people have tried and succeeded in running 8gb with this MB(2x4gb)and the board does support some 4gb sticks according to the support list.My issue is,ddr2 is so outdated that 4gb sticks cost a fortune EXCEPT for this

Basically i would like to know how i can tell if my MB supports high density,i don't know how or where to find the information(google was no help).I know to be wary and it probably isnt going to work but it will be 15$ well spent because the 4gb limitation is bugging me(it maxes out the usage pretty quickly and windows uses 1.5-1.7gb all the time anyways)and it would be nice to know for sure! Thanks again guys!
ps:I know half of you are goingto tell me to upgrade,i WAS supposed to be doing a build this month however the oil crash has cut my work hours by 60%,no longer an option but im content with my super budget system for now :) )

Bignastyid took what Gigabyte, the maker of your board says it does and presented you with that information because that is what the OEM said. Sometimes the OEM does not update this information on very old product lines, when they made the board there was probably not even 4gb ddr2 sticks on the market yet so thus it was not listed on their page.

In regards to high desnity...
4GB Kingston KVR800D2N6/4G is supported along with at least three others.Theres no such thing as AMD specific ram.I wanted serious answers about high density ram im aware of the specs of the pc i built thank you for sharing wrong information. To clarify, the board DOES support 4gb drr2 individual sticks as i said above, and that wasn't my question nonetheless :/

well i haven't bought it,i intend to just to see if it magically works(highly unlikely,i know that already)if i can determine if my MB supports high density.

In regards to high desnity ram, it does only work on SOME amd systems.
On every CPU is a memory controller (years ago it was on the motherboard), on every motherboard there is the north-bridge chipset. These two things in tandem determine what memory is supported. On am3 amd chips the cpu's controller had information for both ddr2 and ddr3 chips, thus the motherboard OEM can build it to support ddr2 or ddr3 chips and select few boards even built it to support both.
Now specifically with high density ram: The nothrbrige chipsets for intel never supported the chip configuration of high density modules, ASUS boards for even AMD never supported the modules, only select few boards made the northbridge capable of supporting it. There are several ebay stores (or at least to be) that even stated in the fine print that it wont work on intel systems.

So in short your intel motherboard will not support the high density memory modules, and just because you have a lack of knowledge and research does not mean that someone else is giving you wrong information, even if that information is not the good news you want to hear that you can get X for pennies on the dollar and it is totally just as good.

Solution

i do not not have a lack of knowledge or research,i obviously did more than him otherwise he would have seen my board DOES officially support at least three types of 4gb ddr2 sticks.I wasn't trying to be mean,i just didn't see the point in his response as he provided an incorrect answer and didn't read my whole question, otherwise he would've seen that the information he provided was already known to me.The only information i needed was if my MB supports high density ram and you answered it,Thank you!
